In 5+ years working with Gather, we have defined and projected the brand’s digital voice. Through a comprehensive digital offer, we’ve helped Gather win the hearts and minds of food lovers worldwide, along with more than a few awards, including the 2016 SPD Brand of the Year.

Gather Journal publishes just two print issues per year, making digital their primary engagement channel. To grow and retain readers between print cycles, we devised a holistic digital strategy that built value across touch points.

HIGH DESIGN TRANSLATED ACROSS MEDIUMS

Gather is recognized for stunning food photography and impeccable style. Its digital presence needed to maintain that essence. We carefully studied the type, imagery, and treatment of the printed publication and designed a website that brought the analog beauty to the screen.

AN EVERGREEN DIGITAL EXPERIENCE 

Gather subscribers were anxious about dirtying the print editions, sometimes buying two copies. We created the Gather Journal Recipe App to relieve the angst with a mess-proof kitchen companion.

PROLIFERATING CONTENT WITH SMART DATA

Content is imported into the website using custom fields. Breaking the data into small components – individual steps, ingredients, quantities, and measurements – allows control over the design and smart proliferation across channels.

All the content from the print issues are imported into the website using custom fields; recipes entered as smaller components: individual steps, ingredients, quantities, and measurements allowing us to control the visual design and distribute content across digital initiatives like Apple News, dedicated apps and reader-friendly perks like digital grocery lists.

AEM MOBILE PLUGIN

We built the first open source Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Mobile plugin allowing Gather to publish directly from their website to each of their apps. It enabled Gather to sync content across platforms with minimal production.
